With the end of World War II the U. S. economy slowed drastically, and this resulted in a cut-back of coin production. The 1946(P) half dollar had a mintage less than half that of 1945(P), and this affect the number preserved by collectors and speculators. Even so, this issue is quite plentiful through the grade of 66, but the certified population drops off rapidly above that grade.
This issue is a rich hunting ground for variety collectors. A pair of bold DDO (doubled-die obverse) varieties are known, and the most prominent of three known DDR varieties is so obvious as to be included in popular guide books. Fortunately, it's also fairly common, making ownership available to any interested collector.
Beautiful and original 1946 Walking Liberty Half Dollar with beautiful sunset orange toning on obverse rim and slightly on reverse. R
ecently purchased from a large estate collection in which I bought the entirety of because of the originality and rarity of the coins which have not seen the light of day in over four decades! None of these coins have ever been sent to grading, and I refuse to mess with the grading services, so truth be told...Some of these coins are grand slams! No reserves and fast, free shipping as always!
