    Description

This piece of nylon wicking cord is 10 yards of cord long.  The cord is approximately the diameter of thin yarn.  Most growers cut an individual wick to be 6” long so this piece will yield approximately 60 six inch pieces of wick.  The larger the flower pot with which the wick(s) will be used the more pieces of wick can be used in order to sufficiently water your plant.
To determine how many pieces of wick cord to use in your pot: (1) Measure the diameter of the top opening of the pot.  (2) Subtract 1 from this dimension.  (3) Round down any fractions.  The resulting answer to this formula tells you how many pieces of wick to use in your flower pot.  For pots 2” in diameter or less use 1 wick, for 3 or 3.5” pots use 2 wicks, for 4” pots use 3 wicks.  Instructions on how to grow African violets by wick watering are included.
Wick watering is a method of setting up houseplants in such a way that they become self-watering.  Growers of large collections of African violets find wick watering particularly convenient.  A nylon cord is inserted into your flower pot up through one of the bottom drainage holes of the pot so as to contact the potting mixture.  One half of the length goes up into the soil and half hangs out from the bottom of the pot.  The pot is placed on your container which should have a lid with a hole cut into it.  A deli container works well.  The wick passes through the hole in the lid into the water in the container.  By capillary action the wick pulls water up into the soil for the plant.  Unraveling at the cut ends of the wick will not impair its function.
Use a potting mix that contains peat moss, perlite, and vermiculite as the main ingredients.  Potting mix that is mostly real earth (soil) would stay too wet when used for the wick watering method.
This offering is for the wicking cord only.  No pot, soil, perlite, vermiculite, live plants, or container with lid is included. The pencil and the ruler in the photo are for size comparison and are not part of the listing.
